The story in brief

The old village bell, called the Gongoro bell, is given to the country to be made into bombs, and the children ring it one last time before it is taken to town covered in flowers. The next day an old man who is hard of hearing comes from a valley in the hills to see the bell, and the children push him all the way to town so he can touch it. Afterwards Father explains that the bell was made near that valley, and the narrator's elder brother says that old things are reborn as new things that go on working.

ずつ after a number shows the same amount for each person or thing. 一人三つずつ means three strikes for every child.

一人 三つずつ かねを つきなさい。

Each of you strike the bell three times.

〜なさい N4 do ~ (gentle command)

The verb's ます-stem plus なさい makes a command, often used by adults to children. つき (from つく) + なさい = strike!

子どもたち、一人 三つずつ かねを つきなさい。

Children, each of you strike the bell three times.

〜に 来る / 行く N5 to come / go in order to ~

The ます-stem plus ながら shows two actions done by the same person at the same time. The main action comes at the end of the sentence.

〜んだよ N4 explaining: it's that ~, you see

んだ (from のだ) gives a reason or explanation, and よ tells the listener something new. Father uses it to explain why the bell belongs to everyone.

だから、あの かねは みんなの かねなんだよ。

That's why that bell belongs to everyone.
