Part 3 of 3 · JLPT N2
Hakuchūmu, part 3: The Corpse in the Shop Window
In this part
The orator whispers that the woman he killed is now completely his, and that he has hidden her body where no policeman would ever look: on display in his own drugstore. The narrator turns, sees the drugstore behind him, and finds real human skin under the wax of the model in the glass case. Shaken, he slips away, sees a policeman laughing along with the crowd, and has no strength left to warn him before he staggers off down the endless white road.

…The laughter stopped as if cut off, and in an instant his former earnest expression returned.
The man began again in a whisper.
And so, you see, the woman had truly become mine, entirely and for good. There was nothing at all to worry about any more. I can kiss her whenever I wish to kiss her. Whenever I wish to hold her tight, I can hold her tight as well. With that, I have all I ever desired."
その死骸はちゃんと俺の店先に飾ってあるのだよ」"…But mind you, a fellow has to be careful, or it's dangerous. I'm a murderer, after all. There's no telling when the coppers might find me out. So I'd worked out a clever plan. A hiding place, see. …Copper or detective, not one of them would ever think of this. Look there, you, take a look. The corpse is on show, neat as you please, right at the front of my shop!"
The man's eyes looked at me.
With a start, I turned round to look behind me.
Right under my nose, where until that very moment I had noticed nothing, there was a white canvas awning… "Drug"… "Guaranteed Remedies"… lettering in a rounded Gothic typeface I had seen before, and beyond it, the anatomical model inside its glass case; the man was the owner of a drugstore that went by the trade name of So-and-so Drug.
There, she's there, isn't she? Please, look more closely at my darling woman."
What made me do it?
Before I knew it, I had stepped in under the awning.
In the glass case before my eyes was a woman's face.
She was smiling broadly, baring her eyeteeth.
Deep beneath the loathsome wax-work sores, I could see real human skin, gone dark.
As proof that it was no artificial thing, it was covered all over with fine downy hair.
My heart suddenly shot up into my throat.
Barely holding up a body that seemed about to collapse, I escaped from under the awning.
Then, taking care that the man should not see me, I left the edge of the crowd.
…When I looked back, a policeman was standing at the rear of the crowd.
He too, just like the others, was listening to the man's speech with a broad smile.
What are you laughing at? Is that proper, given your duty? Do you not understand what that man is saying? If you think it a lie, go in under that awning and see for yourself. In the very middle of the city of Tōkyō, a human corpse is being put on public display, can't you see?"
I thought of tapping the thick-skinned policeman on the shoulder and telling him so.
But I had not the strength of will to carry it out.
Feeling giddy, I began to totter away.
Ahead of me, the white highway stretched on and on, without end.
The heat haze set the rows of telegraph poles swaying like seaweed.
