The story in brief

A little bird and a tree are best friends, and the bird promises to return next year to sing. When it comes back in spring, the tree has been cut down, so the bird follows its trail to a match factory and then to a village. There a girl tells it that the match made from the tree has burned up but its flame still lights her lamp, and the bird sings last year's song to the flame.

とてもうれしそうでした。

It looked very happy.

〜のために N4 for (the sake of) ~

Noun + のために means doing something for someone or something. The bird sings for the flame, which is all that remains of its friend.
