The story in brief
A mermaid leaves her newborn daughter near a seaside town, and a kind old couple who run a candle shop raise the girl. Her painted candles are said to keep ships safe, but a southern trader persuades the couple to sell her, and she leaves behind a few candles painted all red. That night a mysterious woman buys one red candle, a great storm sinks many ships, and from then on red candles bring only storms and death until the town itself disappears.
