The story in brief

Gon, a lonely little fox, steals an eel from Hyōjū, then learns that Hyōjū's sick mother has died. Full of regret, Gon secretly leaves sardines, chestnuts and mushrooms at Hyōjū's house, but the sardines get Hyōjū beaten and his friend Kasuke says the gifts come from the gods. When Gon comes one more time with chestnuts, Hyōjū shoots him, then finds the chestnuts and realises too late who has been bringing them.

This is a story I heard from an old man in my village when I was little.

Long ago, in the hills near a place called Nakayama, there lived a little fox named Gon.

Gon had no family.

He lived all alone in a hole in the woods.

Night and day, Gon came down to the village and did nothing but make mischief.

He would take vegetables from the fields and set fire to the villagers' things.

It was autumn.

It rained for three whole days, and Gon stayed in his hole.

When the rain stopped, the sky cleared up beautifully.

Gon felt relieved and came out of his hole.

There was more water in the river than usual.

As Gon was walking along the river, he saw a man in the water.

That's Hyōjū," thought Gon.

Hyōjū had waded into the water and was catching fish with a net.

Inside the net, a fat eel and some big fish were shining white.

Hyōjū put the fish into a basket and went off upstream.

Once Hyōjū was gone, Gon felt like making a little mischief.

Gon grabbed the fish in the basket and threw them into the river.

Last of all, Gon took the eel in his mouth.

The eel wrapped its long body around Gon's neck.

Just then, Hyōjū shouted in a loud voice, "Hey, you thieving fox!"

Gon jumped in surprise and ran off as fast as he could, eel and all.

Near his hole he looked back, but Hyōjū had not come after him.

Gon bit the eel's head and at last got it off his neck.

About ten days later, when Gon passed by Hyōjū's house, there were lots of people there.

Women were cooking food outside.

Oh, it's a funeral. I wonder who died."

In the early afternoon, Gon was hiding near the village graveyard.

People dressed in white kimono came along.

Hyōjū was among them.

Hyōjū, who was usually so lively, looked downhearted today.

The one who died is Hyōjū's mother."

That night, Gon lay in his hole and thought.

His mother must have been sick and said she wanted to eat eel. That's why Hyōjū was out catching fish with his net. And then I went and took the eel. I bet his mother died without getting to eat any eel. I wish I'd never played that trick."

Hyōjū was working alone outside his house.

Until now he had lived a poor life with just his mother.

But now he was all alone.

He's just like me," thought Gon.

Just then, a voice called out, "Cheap sardines!"

A man selling sardines went into one of the village houses.

While he was inside, Gon stole five or six sardines.

Then he threw them into Hyōjū's house and ran back to his hole.

Gon thought he had done a good deed.

The next day, Gon gathered chestnuts in the hills and took them to Hyōjū's house.

Hyōjū was in the middle of a meal, lost in thought.

There was a cut on his cheek.

Who threw those sardines into my house, I wonder? Because of that, folks took me for a thief. The sardine man gave me a beating."

Oh no," thought Gon.

Gon quietly left the chestnuts at the entrance of the house and went home.

The next day, and the day after that, Gon brought chestnuts.

He brought matsutake mushrooms, too.

One bright moonlit night, Gon went out to play.

Then he heard voices talking from farther down the road.

It was Hyōjū and his friend Kasuke.

Gon hid at the side of the road and listened to the two of them talk.

Strange things have been happening lately. Ever since my mother died, somebody's been leaving chestnuts and matsutake for me every day."

Who?"

That's just it, I don't know."

The two of them went into a villager's house.

Gon waited outside.

When the two of them headed home, Gon followed along again.

Kasuke said:

That's bound to be the gods. The gods are worried about you now you're all alone, so they're giving you things. You ought to thank the gods every day."

Yeah, I'll do that."

Gon felt it was a real letdown.

I'm the one who brings the chestnuts, and yet…

He doesn't thank me, he thanks the gods?

The next day, too, Gon took chestnuts and went to Hyōjū's house.

Hyōjū was working behind the house.

Gon slipped quietly in through the back entrance.

Hyōjū saw a fox go into his house.

It's that Gon. The fox that stole my eel has come to make more mischief."

Hyōjū took up his gun.

Then he crept quietly closer and shot Gon as he came out.

Gon fell down.

Hyōjū ran over and looked inside the house.

There, chestnuts had been left.

Hyōjū was stunned.

Gon, was it you? You're the one who kept bringing me chestnuts?"

Gon closed his eyes and nodded.

The gun dropped from Hyōjū's hands.

A thin wisp of blue smoke was still rising from it.

Grammar

N4 doing things like A and B

Lists a few typical actions as examples, not a complete list. Here it shows the kinds of mischief Gon did.

He would take vegetables from the fields and set fire to the villagers' things.

N3 doing nothing but ~

ばかり after a noun or て-form means 'only' and often sounds critical. Gon did nothing except make mischief.

He did nothing but make mischief.

N3 must be ~; surely ~

Expresses a strong guess that the speaker feels sure about. Gon is sure the mother died without eating eel.

I bet his mother died without getting to eat any eel.

N3 I wish I hadn't ~

Literally 'it would have been good if I hadn't ~'. Used to express regret about something already done.

I wish I'd never played that trick.

N4 to be ~ed (often with a sense of suffering)

The passive here shows that Hyōjū was on the receiving end of something unpleasant: people thought he was a thief, and he was hit. The person who does the action is marked with に.

Folks took me for a thief. The sardine man gave me a beating.

N3 even though ~; and yet ~

Shows a result that goes against what should happen, often with frustration. Placed at the end, it leaves the complaint hanging.

I'm the one who brings the chestnuts, and yet…
