The story in brief
Gon, a lonely and mischievous fox, steals an eel from Hyōjū, then sees that Hyōjū's mother has died and guesses she never got to eat it. Full of regret, Gon leaves sardines once, then chestnuts and matsutake day after day, but Hyōjū believes the gifts come from the gods. When Gon slips into the house once more, Hyōjū sees the fox that stole his eel and shoots him, and only then realises who had been bringing the chestnuts.
