The story in brief

The rich man Otsuberu tricks a friendly white elephant into staying at his threshing shed and loads him with a chain and weights. The elephant works hard, but he gets less and less food until he is too weak to stand. A child in red brings him a pen and paper, he writes to his friends in the mountains, and the herd crushes Otsuberu and sets the white elephant free.

Grammar

〜ながら N4 while doing ~

Add ながら to the verb stem (すい from すう) to show two actions happening at the same time. The main action comes last.

オツベルは たばこを すいながら、こやの 中を あるいて います。

Otsuberu strolls around inside the shed, smoking.

〜ないで N4 without doing ~ / instead of doing ~

The ない-form + で links to the next action and means you do the second thing without doing the first. Here the workers keep working without looking at the elephant.

みんなは ぞうを 見ないで、しごとを しました。

Nobody looked at the elephant; they all just kept on working.

〜く なる N5 to become ~

Change an い-adjective's final い to く and add なる to show change. すくない → すくなく なりました "became less".

でも、食べものは だんだん すくなく なりました。

But his food got less and less.

〜なさい N4 do ~ (command)

Verb stem + なさい is a firm command, often from a parent or boss. Otsuberu uses it to order the elephant to stay.

「では、今日から ここに いなさい。」

"Well then, from today you stay right here."

〜ことが できる N4 can do ~

Dictionary form + ことが できる means "be able to". Here it is in the negative te-form, できなくて, "could not, and so...".

たつ ことが できなくて、何も 食べないで

he couldn't stand up, ate nothing at all
