The story in brief

Shiro, a pure white dog, runs away instead of saving his friend Kuro from a dogcatcher, and when he gets home his whole body has turned black and his family drives him off. Wandering through Tōkyō, he rescues a puppy named Napoleon and goes on to perform many brave deeds that appear in the newspapers. Exhausted, he returns home one autumn night, and in the morning the children recognise him because he has become white again.

Grammar

〜ようとする N3 to try to do; to be about to do

The volitional form plus とする shows an attempt or an action just about to begin. Here the dogcatcher is in the middle of trying to catch Kuro.

犬ころしは、黒をつかまえようとしていました。

The dogcatcher was trying to catch Kuro.

〜ないで N4 without doing

The negative form plus で links two actions, saying the second one happens without the first. Kuro eats his bread without knowing anything.

黒は何も知らないで、パンを食べていました。

Kuro knew nothing about it and was eating some bread.

今にも〜そうだ N3 looks as if (something) will happen any moment

The verb stem plus そう means 'looks like it will', and 今にも stresses that it could happen right now. The sister seems ready to burst into tears.

お姉さんは今にもなきそうでした。

The sister looked as if she would burst into tears at any moment.

Verb (dictionary form) + な N4 don't …! (strong prohibition)

Adding な to the dictionary form makes a blunt, forceful order not to do something. The voice seems to command Shiro not to run away this time.

でも、そのこえは「にげるな!」とも聞こえました。

But the voice also seemed to be saying, "Don't run away!"

〜てやる N3 to do (something) for someone of lower status

Te-form plus やる means doing a favour for someone younger or lower, like an adult to a child or animal. It fits Shiro's fatherly tone toward the puppy.

家まで送ってやる。

I'll see you home.

〜のです N4 explanation or revelation ('you see, it was…')

のです adds an explanatory tone, often revealing the reason or truth behind earlier events. Here the storyteller reveals who the mysterious black dog was.

その黒い犬は、白だったのです。

That black dog, you see, was Shiro.
