Futago no Hoshi, part 6: The Comet's Betrayal and the Fall to the Sea
In this part
The comet swears before the King that the twin blue stars are setting out on a journey by the King's command, then carries them far away and hurls them off, laughing that its oath is cancelled. Chunse and Pōse fall through the sky into the sea, where they find they can still breathe. A starfish on the sea floor takes them for newly arrived starfish, and Pōse looks sadly up at their distant palace.

Then will you swear it before the King?"
The comet answered without the least hesitation.
Why, of course I'll swear. There now, O King, bear witness. Ahem—today, by the King's command, the twin blue stars set out on a journey. See? That'll do, won't it?"
The two of them said together,
Yes, that will do. Then let us go."
At that, the comet put on an oddly solemn air and said,
Well then, quick, grab hold of my tail. Hold on tight, mind. There. Ready?"
The two of them held on tight to the comet's tail.
The comet blew out a single puff of pale blue light and said,
Right, we're off! Gee-gee-gee-fooo. Gee-gee-fooo."
Truly, the comet is the whale of the sky.
The weaker stars scattered and fled this way and that.
They had already come a long way.
The twins' palace had grown far, far away, and now it looked like nothing more than a tiny pale blue dot.
Chunse Dōji spoke.
We have come a good long way. Is the place where the Silver River falls still further on, I wonder?"
At that, the comet's manner changed completely.
Hah! Never mind where the Silver River falls, look to where you two will fall! Here we go: one, two, three!"
The comet lashed its tail hard two or three times, and on top of that it turned round and blasted them fiercely with pale blue mist, blowing the two of them right off.
The two of them fell headlong through the dark blue-black void.
The comet,
crying, "Ahahaha, ahahaha! That oath just now, and everything else besides, is all taken back! Gee-gee-gee, fooo. Gee-gee-fooo," raced off into the distance.
As they fell, the two of them held fast to each other's elbows.
These twin stars meant to fall together, however far they might go.
Once their bodies entered the air, they roared like thunder and red sparks crackled up from them, so that even just watching was enough to make one dizzy.
Then they passed through pitch-black clouds and plunged like arrows into a sea where dark waves were howling.
Down and down they sank.
Yet, strange to say, they could breathe freely even under the water.
The bottom of the sea was soft mud, where large black things lay sleeping and hazy seaweed swayed to and fro.
Chunse Dōji spoke.
Pōse, this must be the bottom of the sea. We can never climb back up to the sky now. Whatever will become of us?"
Pōse Dōji said,
We were tricked by the comet. The comet even lied to the King himself. Isn't he truly a hateful fellow?"
Just then, right at their feet, a little starfish, star-shaped and glowing red, spoke up.
What sea are you folk from? You're wearing the mark of blue starfish, aren't you?"
Pōse Dōji said,
We are not starfish. We are stars."
At this the starfish grew angry and said,
What's that? Stars, you say? Every starfish was a star once. So you've only just got here, have you? Hah! Then you're greenhorn starfish. Brand-new villains. Doing wicked things to end up here and then putting on airs about being stars doesn't go down well at the bottom of the sea. Why, even I was a first-class soldier back when I was up in the sky."
Pōse Dōji looked up sorrowfully.
The rain had already stopped and the clouds had all gone, and the sea water had grown as still as glass, so that the sky could be seen clearly.
The Silver River, the Well of the Sky, the Eagle Star, the Harp-Player Star, all of them could be seen clearly.
Their own palace could be seen too, tiny, tiny.
Chunse, I can see the whole sky. I can even see our palace. And yet we have become starfish after all."

Grammar
N2 of course, certainly
Added to the plain form of a verb or adjective, とも gives an emphatic, confident 'yes'. The comet answers as if swearing costs it nothing.
Why, of course I'll swear.
N4 nothing but, only
しか with a negative verb limits something to one thing. Here the palace looks like nothing more than a small dot.
Now it looked like nothing more than a tiny pale blue dot.
N3 to try to, to mean to
The volitional form plus とする expresses an attempt or intention to do something. Here the twins tried to fall together, no matter how far.
These twin stars meant to fall together, however far they might go.
N3 even
さえ marks an extreme case: even merely watching would cause dizziness. It appears after a て-form here, and after a particle in 王さまへさえ.
so that even to watch it would have made one dizzy
〜ながら (concessive) N2 although, despite
Besides 'while doing', ながら can mean 'even though'. The starfish mocks them for boasting of being stars despite having arrived here through wrongdoing.
Doing wicked things to end up here and then putting on airs about being stars doesn't go down well at the bottom of the sea.
