Futago no Hoshi, part 8: Homeward on the Silver Waterspout
In this part
The sea-serpent king welcomes the twins with great respect, reveals that their King of the Sky is his own master, and sends them home on a Waterspout. On the way they see the wicked comet break apart and fall into the sea to become a sea cucumber. Back in their palaces, the twins apologise to the unseen King, pass on the pleas of the starfish and the sea cucumber, and take up their silver flutes just before dawn.

Now, let us be going," said the sea serpent, shaking his white hair and speaking with deep respect.
The two followed after him and passed between the starfish.
Before long, in the dark-blue glimmer of the water, there stood the gate of a great white castle; its doors opened of their own accord, and a great many splendid sea serpents came out from within.
And the twin stars were led before the King of the Sea Serpents.
The King was an old man with a long white beard, and he smiled kindly and said:
You are Chunse Dōji and Pōse Dōji. I know of you well. The tale of how you once risked your very lives to mend the wicked heart of the Scorpion up in the sky has reached even us down here. I have even had it put into the readers of our elementary schools. And now you have met with such a dreadful misfortune; you must surely have been greatly startled."
Chunse Dōji said:
Your words are far too kind, and we are truly humbled. We can no longer go back to the heavens, so if it is at all possible, we should like to be of some service to all of you here."
The King said:
No, no, such modesty humbles me. I shall at once command the Waterspout to carry you back up to the heavens. When you have returned, please tell your King that this lowly sea serpent sends him his most respectful greetings."
Pōse Dōji said joyfully:
Then, Your Majesty, do you know our King?"
The King hurriedly stepped down from his chair and said:
Oh no, it is far more than that. Your King is my one and only King. Since long, long ago he has been my teacher. I am his foolish servant. No, you will not understand it yet. But in time, surely, you will. Now then, I shall have the Waterspout escort you before the night gives way to dawn. Here, here! Are the preparations ready?"
A sea serpent, one of his retainers,
answered, "Yes, sire, it is waiting before the gate."
The two bowed politely to the King.
Farewell then, Your Majesty, and may you be well. One day we shall send you our thanks once more, properly, from the sky. May this palace flourish forever."
The King stood and said:
And may you, too, shine ever more splendidly. Farewell, then, and be well."
The retainers all bowed respectfully at once.
The boys went out through the gate.
The Waterspout lay there, coiled in loops of silver.
One of the sea serpents set the two of them upon its head.
The two took hold of its horns.
Just then a great many starfish glowing with red light came out and cried:
Goodbye! Please give our regards to the King of the Sky. We beg you to ask that we, too, may one day be forgiven."
The two said together:
We will be sure to tell him so. Before long we shall meet again in the sky."
The Waterspout rose up slowly, ever so slowly.
Goodbye, goodbye!"
Already the Waterspout had lifted its head above the pitch-black sea.
And then, all at once, with a fierce crackling roar, the Waterspout shot up, water and all, like an arrow, high, high into the sky.
There is still a good while yet before the night will end.
The Milky Way draws nearer and nearer.
The two boys' palaces can already be seen clearly.
Just look over there," said the Waterspout in the darkness.
They looked, and there was that great comet of pale blue light, broken all to pieces, its head, tail and body each separately letting out dreadful, crazed cries as they flashed and crackled and fell away into the pitch-black sea.
That one will turn into a sea cucumber," the Waterspout said quietly.
Already the song of the circling stars can be heard in the sky.
And so the boys arrived at their palaces.
The Waterspout set the two down,
and saying, "Goodbye, and be well," it went back to the sea like the wind.
The twin stars each climbed up into their own palace.
Then they sat down neatly and spoke to the unseen King of the Sky.
Through our own carelessness we neglected our duty for a time, and we are truly sorry. Yet in spite of that, tonight, by Your grace, we were wondrously saved. The King of the Sea asked us to convey his deepest respects to You. And the starfish at the bottom of the sea begged for Your mercy. We also ask this of our own accord: that, if it may be so, the sea cucumber, too, might be forgiven."
And the two took up their silver flutes.
The eastern sky turned golden; dawn was very near.

Grammar
N3 honorific form of a verb
Putting a verb stem between お and になる raises the subject's actions respectfully. The sea-serpent king uses it to speak of the twins' deeds with deference.
how you once risked your lives to mend the wicked heart of the Scorpion in the sky
〜させる (causative) N4 to make or have someone do something
入れる becomes 入れさせる, 'to have (someone) put in'. The king did not write the readers himself but had the story included in them.
I have even had it put into the readers of our elementary schools.
N3 before something happens, while it has not yet happened
A negative verb plus うちに marks a time limit: the action must be done before the change occurs. Here the twins must leave before dawn breaks.
Now, I shall have the Waterspout escort you before the night gives way to dawn.
N1 probably will not
まい added to the ます form is a formal, somewhat old-fashioned negative guess, much like ないでしょう. The king politely supposes the twins cannot yet understand.
No, you will not understand it yet.
N3 may…, I hope that…
Ending a sentence with ますように, or here just ますよう, expresses a wish or prayer. The twins wish the palace lasting prosperity.
May this palace flourish forever.
N2 in spite of, even though
It introduces a result that goes against what the previous situation would lead you to expect. Despite neglecting their duty, the twins were saved.
Yet in spite of that, tonight, by Your grace, we were wondrously saved.
