Momotarō, part 4: Massacre and Surrender on Onigashima
In this part
Momotarō and his three hungry retainers storm Onigashima and slaughter the panicking, innocent oni with brutal cruelty. The surviving chieftain surrenders, agreeing to hand over all the island's treasure and his children as hostages. When he asks what wrong the oni committed, Momotarō gives only a circular answer and threatens to kill them all if they still do not understand.

Upon these innocent oni Momotarō inflicted a terror such as they had not known since the founding of their nation.
The oni forgot all about their iron clubs and, crying "The humans have come!", fled in confusion this way and that among the lofty, towering palms.
Forward! Forward! Every oni you find, kill it on sight! Leave not a single one alive!"
With the peach banner in one hand and waving a rising-sun fan again and again, Momotarō gave the order to his three, the dog, the monkey and the pheasant.
The dog, the monkey and the pheasant may not have been retainers who got along well together.
Yet surely nothing is better qualified to make soldiers of peerless loyalty and valour than starving animals.
Like a storm, they all chased the fleeing oni this way and that.
The dog killed a young oni with a single bite.
The pheasant, too, pecked an oni child to death with its sharp beak.
The monkey, too—being, after all, a close relative of us humans—never failed to violate an oni girl at his pleasure before strangling her.
…………
After every possible crime had been committed, the oni chieftain at last surrendered before Momotarō, along with the handful of oni who had escaped with their lives.
Momotarō's triumph may well be imagined.
Onigashima is no longer the land of bliss it was only yesterday, where birds of paradise sang.
Throughout the palm groves, the corpses of oni lie scattered everywhere.
Still with the banner in one hand and his three retainers at his side, Momotarō solemnly pronounced the following to the oni chieftain, who lay pressed flat to the ground like a spider.
Very well. Out of special mercy, I shall spare your lives. In return, you are to present every last treasure of Onigashima to me, understood?"
Yes, my lord, we shall present them."
Furthermore, you are to hand over your children as hostages, understood?"
That too, my lord, we humbly accept."
Once more the oni chieftain pressed his forehead to the earth, and then fearfully put a question to Momotarō.
ついてはその無礼の次第をお明し下さる訣には参りますまいか?」"We humbly presume that we must have committed some discourtesy against Your Lordship, and have therefore suffered this chastisement. And yet, in truth, neither I nor any oni of Onigashima can in the least conceive what discourtesy we may have shown Your Lordship. Might it, then, be possible for you to deign to make known to us the nature of that discourtesy?"
Momotarō nodded with lordly calm.
Momotarō, the finest in Japan, having taken into his service three loyal retainers—the dog, the monkey and the pheasant—has therefore come to subdue Onigashima."
Then may I ask for what reason you took those three honourable ones into your service?"
Why, naturally, because I had resolved to subdue Onigashima, I took them on, even at the cost of millet dumplings. Well? If you still say you don't understand, I'll kill the lot of you as well."
As if startled, the oni chieftain sprang back three feet or so, and bowed more politely than ever.
