In this part
The king insists that no one can be trusted, and Melos, ready to die, asks for three days' grace so he can see his sister married. He offers his dearest friend Selinuntius as a hostage, and the king cruelly agrees, sure that Melos will never return. Selinuntius silently accepts, and Melos runs through the night to his village, where his startled sister greets him with a flood of questions.

It was you people who taught me that suspicion is the proper frame of mind. The human heart cannot be relied upon. Men are, by their very nature, nothing but lumps of selfish greed. They must not be trusted." The tyrant murmured this calmly, then heaved a sigh.
I, too, would like peace, you know."
Peace for what? To guard your own throne?" This time it was Melos who sneered.
What kind of peace comes from killing the innocent?"
Silence, you base-born wretch!" The king lifted his head sharply and struck back.
With the mouth, one can say anything, however pure it sounds. But I see straight through to the bottom of men's bowels, and I cannot help it. You too, before long, will be nailed to the cross, and then, weep and beg for pardon as you may, I will not listen."
Ah, how clever the king is! Go on, be as proud of yourself as you please. I stand here fully prepared to die. I will never beg for my life.
Only—" Melos began, then dropped his gaze to his feet and hesitated for a moment. "Only, if you have any wish to show me mercy, grant me three days' time before my execution.
I want to see my only sister settled with a husband. Within three days I will have the wedding held in my village, and I will surely return here."
Nonsense," said the tyrant, laughing low in a hoarse voice.
What an outrageous lie! Are you telling me the little bird you set free will fly back?"
Yes. It will come back." Melos insisted desperately.
I keep my promises. Release me for just three days. My sister is waiting for me to come home.
If you cannot trust me that far, very well: in this city there is a stonemason called Selinuntius.
He is my truest friend, second to none. I will leave him here as a hostage. If I run away and do not come back here by sunset on the third day, strangle my friend to death. I beg you, do that."
Hearing this, the king smirked quietly to himself, his heart full of cruelty.
Such cheek he has!
He is bound not to come back anyway.
It would be amusing to pretend to be fooled by this liar and let him go.
And then it would be most satisfying to put his stand-in to death on the third day.
This is why men cannot be trusted," I shall say with a sorrowful face, and send that stand-in to the cross.
How I should like to rub it in, good and proper, to all those fellows in the world who call themselves honest!
I have heard your request. Summon this stand-in of yours. On the third day, be back before the sun goes down. If you are late, I will kill your stand-in without fail. Come a little late, why don't you? Then your crime shall be forgiven forever."
What—what are you saying?"
Ha ha! If you value your life, come late. I know what is in your heart."
Melos stamped his feet in bitter frustration.
He no longer wished to say a single word.
His friend since boyhood, Selinuntius, was summoned to the royal castle in the dead of night.
There, before the face of the tyrant Dionis, the two good friends met again for the first time in two years.
Melos told his friend the whole story.
Selinuntius nodded without a word and held Melos tightly in his arms.
Between friend and friend, that was enough.
Selinuntius was bound with ropes.
Melos set off at once.
It was early summer, and the whole sky was full of stars.
That night Melos did not sleep a wink, but hurried and hurried along the ten-ri road, and when he reached his village it was the next morning; the sun had already climbed high, and the villagers had gone out into the fields and begun their work.
Melos's sixteen-year-old sister was watching the flock of sheep that day in place of her brother.
She was startled to catch sight of her brother staggering toward her, worn out and exhausted.
And she showered him with question after question.

Grammar
N3 must not ~
〜てはならない states a prohibition; ぬ is the classical negative ending that replaces ない, giving the king's words an archaic, weighty sound.
They must not be trusted.
N3 even if ~
A colloquial form of 〜ても. Here 泣いて詫びたって means 'even if you weep and apologise', followed by the refusal 聞かぬ.
Weep and beg for pardon as you may, I will not listen.
N2 go ahead and ~ (permission, often scornful)
Attached to the dictionary form, it tells someone to do something as they please. It is often contemptuous or ironic, as when Melos mocks the king and the king taunts Melos with
Go on, be as proud of yourself as you please.
N3 is certain to ~, must surely ~
Expresses the speaker's strong conviction. Combined with どうせ 'in any case', it shows the king's cynical certainty.
He is certain not to come back, whatever he says.
N3 want to let/have (someone) do ~ for them
The causative 持たせる plus てやる (doing a favour for someone of lower or equal status) plus たい. Melos wants to give his sister the benefit of a husband.
I want to see my only sister settled with a husband.
Verb stem + に + same verb N2 to do ~ over and over, to do ~ intensely
Repeating a verb with に between the stem and the full form stresses how intensely the action continues. It is common in literary narration.
hurried and hurried along the ten-ri road
