Toshishun, part 6: Silence Before the King of Hell
In this part
Toshishun's soul descends to Hell, where King Enma demands to know why he sat on Mount Gabi. He endures every torment in silence, so the King has his dead parents, reborn as wretched horses, brought in and beaten before his eyes. When his mother's faint voice tells him not to worry about them and to keep silent, Toshishun forgets the hermit's warning, runs to her and cries out, "Mother!"

Toshishun's body lay face up upon the rock, but his soul slipped quietly out of it and went down to the very bottom of Hell.
Between this world and Hell there runs a road called the Anketsudō, where all year round, beneath a dark sky, a wind as cold as ice goes whistling and howling.
Toshishun was blown along by that wind, drifting through the sky for a while like a mere leaf, until at last he came out in front of a splendid palace hung with a tablet that read "Shinra Hall."
The crowd of demons in front of the palace no sooner caught sight of Toshishun than they surrounded him and dragged him down before the steps.
At the top of the steps sat a king, dressed in a jet-black robe and wearing a golden crown, glaring sternly all about him.
This could be none other than King Enma, of whom Toshishun had long heard tell.
Wondering what would become of him, Toshishun knelt there in fear and trembling.
You there! For what purpose were you sitting upon Mount Gabi?"
King Enma's voice rang down from the top of the steps like thunder.
Toshishun was about to answer the question at once, but then he suddenly remembered once more Tekkanshi's warning: "Never say a single word."
So he simply kept his head bowed and stayed as silent as if he had been mute.
At this King Enma raised the iron sceptre he was holding, and, with the whiskers all over his face bristling,—
Where do you think you are? Answer at once and it will go well with you; if not, I shall have you put to the torments of Hell without a moment's delay!" he roared imperiously.
But Toshishun, just as before, did not move so much as his lips.
Seeing this, King Enma at once turned to the demons and gave them some fierce command; the demons bowed respectfully all together, and in an instant they seized Toshishun and flew up into the sky above Shinra Hall.
As everyone knows, Hell has not only the Mountain of Swords and the Lake of Blood, but also the valley of flames called the Hell of Scorching Heat and the sea of ice called the Hell of Bitter Cold, all lying side by side beneath a pitch-black sky.
The demons threw Toshishun into these hells one after another.
And so, cruelly, Toshishun had his chest pierced by swords, his face burned by flames, his tongue pulled out, his skin flayed, was pounded with iron pestles, boiled in pots of oil, had his brains sucked out by poisonous snakes and his eyes pecked out by great hawks — there would be no end to it if one tried to count up his sufferings; he was made to endure every torment there is.
Even so, Toshishun endured with great patience, gritting his teeth hard, and never uttered a single word.
Even the demons, it seems, were quite dumbfounded by this.
They flew once more through the night-dark sky, and when they returned to the front of Shinra Hall they dragged Toshishun down at the foot of the steps just as before, and to King Enma above in the palace,
they reported with one voice, "This sinner shows no sign whatever of speaking."
King Enma knitted his brows and for a while sat lost in thought, but at last, as though something had occurred to him,
he commanded one of the demons, "This man's father and mother must have fallen into the Realm of Beasts. Bring them here at once."
In an instant the demon rode off on the wind, soaring up into the sky of Hell.
Then, no sooner had he gone than, like a shooting star, he came swooping down again in front of Shinra Hall, driving two beasts before him.
When Toshishun saw those beasts, he was astonished beyond words.
For although both of them had the shape of shabby, skinny horses, their faces were exactly those of his dead father and mother, whom he could never forget, not even in his dreams.
You there! If you do not confess plainly why you were sitting upon Mount Gabi, this time I shall make your father and mother suffer!"
Even under this threat, Toshishun still gave no answer.
You undutiful wretch! So you think it does not matter if your father and mother suffer, as long as things go well for you, is that it?"
King Enma bellowed in a voice so dreadful that it seemed Shinra Hall itself would crumble.
Strike them, demons! Beat those two beasts until their flesh and bones are smashed to pieces!"
The demons answered "Yes, sir!" all at once, took up their iron whips and rose to their feet, and from every side they beat the two horses without the slightest mercy.
The whips whistled as they cut through the air, falling like rain wherever they happened to land and tearing open the horses' skin and flesh.
The horses — his father and mother, turned into beasts — writhed in agony, their eyes filled with tears of blood, and neighed so pitifully that it was unbearable to watch.
Well? Will you still not confess?"
King Enma had the demons stop their whipping for a moment and pressed Toshishun once more for an answer.
By then both horses, their flesh torn and their bones broken, lay collapsed before the steps, barely breathing.
Toshishun, desperately recalling Tekkanshi's words, kept his eyes tightly shut.
Just then a faint voice reached his ears, so faint it could hardly be called a voice at all.
Don't you worry, dear. Whatever becomes of us, if only you can be happy, there's nothing in the world better than that. Whatever the great King may say, if there's something you don't want to tell, just keep quiet."
It was, without any doubt, the dear, familiar voice of his mother.
Before he knew it, Toshishun opened his eyes.
And he saw one of the horses, lying helpless on the ground, gazing sadly and steadily up at his face.
Even in the midst of such suffering, his mother was thinking of her son's feelings, and did not show the least sign of resentment at being beaten by the demons' whips.
Compared with the people of the world, who flatter you when you become rich and will not even speak to you when you become poor, what a precious heart this was!
What a brave and loving resolve!
Forgetting even the old man's warning, Toshishun ran to her side, nearly stumbling as he went, threw both arms around the neck of the half-dead horse, and with tears streaming down, cried out once: "Mother!"
