Part 11 of 11 · JLPT N2
Kai no Hi, part 11: The Jewel Shatters and Flies Away
In this part
Homoi's father shows the gathered birds the Shell-Fire, now only a plain white stone. It cracks, bursts into smoke that blinds Homoi, then re-forms into its old blazing self and flies out of the window. The owl leaves sneering about the mere six days, and Homoi's father comforts his son, promising his eyes will heal and telling him that understanding what happened makes him truly fortunate.

Come in, please," said Homoi's father, and he led everyone toward the house.
The birds followed after him in a long, shuffling line.
Homoi trailed miserably behind them all, crying as he went.
The owl lumbered along with long, heavy strides, and every now and then he looked back at Homoi with a fearsome stare.
Everyone went into the house.
The birds filled up every place in the house: the floor, the shelves, the desk, every corner.
The owl, rolling his great eyes off in some wild direction, kept clearing his throat: "Ahem, ahem."
Homoi's father picked up the Shell-Fire, which had become nothing but a plain white stone,
and the very moment he said, "This is how it is now. Please, laugh at us all you like," the Shell-Fire gave a sharp click and split in two.
Then, with a fierce crackle-crackle-crack, before their very eyes it crumbled away just like smoke.
At the doorway Homoi cried out "Ah!" and fell down.
The powder had got into his eyes.
Everyone was startled and started to go over to him, but this time there was a pitter-pitter-patter of sound all around, and the smoke gathered little by little, soon became several fine pieces, and at last, with a clack, the two pieces fitted together, and it was the Shell-Fire just as it had been before.
The jewel blazed like an erupting volcano, shone like the setting sun, and with a whoosh it flew out of the window and away.
All the birds lost interest, and one by one, two by two, they went off, until only the owl was left.
The owl stared rudely all around the room,
Only six days, wasn't it? Ho-ho.
Only six days.
he sneered, and shaking his shoulders, he strode out with long steps.
What was more, Homoi's eyes had turned cloudy and white, just like the jewel a little while before, and he could no longer see anything at all.
From beginning to end, his mother did nothing but cry.
His father had folded his arms and was thinking intently, but at last he patted Homoi gently on the back and said:
Don't cry. Things like this happen everywhere. And you, who have understood that so well, are the most fortunate of all. Your eyes will surely get better again. Your father will make them better. There now. Don't cry."
Outside the window the mist had cleared, the leaves of the lilies of the valley glittered and sparkled, and the bellflowers
rang out the morning bells loud and high: "Kan, kan, kankaeko, kanko-kanko-kan."
