In this part

The fox brings Homoi a net and suggests they catch birds and insects to make a zoo. When Homoi tries to free the trapped birds, the fox threatens to kill him, and Homoi runs home in fear. At home a small white cloud has appeared inside the Shell-Fire, and it grows larger even as his father and mother try to polish it away.

Then the fox came along carrying three square loaves of bread and wearing short trousers.

Fox. Good morning," said Homoi.

With a nasty sort of grin, the fox

said, "Well, now, that gave me quite a fright yesterday, I'll tell you. Your father's a stubborn one, Mr Homoi, isn't he? But what of it? He got over his bad mood soon enough, I'll bet. Today let's do something really good fun. Tell me, do you dislike zoos?"

Homoi

said, "No. I don't dislike them."

The fox took a small net out from the front of his coat.

そして、Then he

said, "There you are. If you hang this thing up, it'll catch dragonflies, bees, sparrows, jays, even bigger fellows than that, I'll tell you. What say we gather them up and start a zoo of our own?"

Homoi pictured the scene of the zoo for a moment, and it seemed so much fun that he could hardly bear it.

そこで、So he

said, "Let's do it. But are you sure you can catch them with that net?"

Looking as though he found this terribly funny, the fox

said, "Sure as sure can be. Now you hurry along and put that bread away. In the meantime I'll have gathered a hundred or so already."

Homoi hurriedly took the square loaves home, put them on the shelf in the kitchen, and hurried back again.

When he looked, the fox had already hung the net all over a birch tree in the mist, and was laughing with his mouth wide open.

Ha ha ha ha! Just look at this. Four of them caught already."

So said the fox, pointing at a big glass box he had brought from who knows where.

Sure enough, inside it were four birds, a jay, a bush warbler, a red avadavat and a siskin, all fluttering and flapping about.

But when they saw Homoi's face, they all suddenly grew quiet, as though they felt safe.

The bush warbler spoke through the glass.

Mr Homoi. We beseech you, pray rescue us by your power. We have been captured by the fox. Tomorrow we shall surely be eaten. We humbly implore you, Mr Homoi."

Homoi at once tried to open the box.

At that, the fox wrinkled his forehead into dark furrows, made his eyes slant up fiercely, and roared.

Homoi! Watch yourself. Just you try laying a finger on that box. I'll eat you alive. You thief!"

His mouth looked as if it might split right across his face.

Homoi was so frightened that he ran home as fast as his legs could carry him.

Today his mother had gone out to the meadow as well, and was not at home.

Homoi's heart was pounding so hard that he took out the box to look at the Shell-Fire, and opened the lid.

It was still blazing like fire, just as before.

But perhaps it was only his imagination: in one spot he could see a tiny, tiny white cloudiness, no bigger than the prick of a needle.

Homoi could not stop worrying about it.

So, as he always did, he breathed on it, puff, puff, and gently rubbed the surface with the red avadavat's breast feathers.

But somehow it would not come off.

Just then, his father came home.

Seeing that Homoi's face had changed colour, he said,

Homoi. Has the Shell-Fire clouded over? You look dreadfully pale. Come, let me see." Then he held the jewel up to the light, looked through it, laughed and said,

Oh, nonsense, that'll come off in no time. Why, the yellow flames are, if anything, burning even more brightly than before. Here, give me a few of the red avadavat's feathers." And his father began to polish it with great care.

But far from coming off, the cloudiness seemed to be gradually growing larger.

His mother came home.

Without a word she took the Shell-Fire from his father, held it up to the light, looked through it and sighed, and then she breathed on it herself and polished it.

Grammar

N3 Let's…, why don't we…

The volitional form plus じゃありませんか makes an enthusiastic invitation. The fox uses it to make his proposal sound friendly and persuasive.

What say we gather them up and start a zoo of our own?

N4 to do something in advance / have something done

て-form + おく shows an action done ahead of time or left in a resulting state. The fox promises to have the creatures already gathered by the time Homoi returns.

In the meantime I'll have gathered a hundred or so already.

〜てみろ(threat) N3 Just try doing…! (and see what happens)

The blunt imperative of 〜てみる dares someone to act, implying punishment. With でも ('so much as'), the fox warns Homoi not even to touch the box.

Just you try laying a finger on that box. I'll eat you alive.

N3 can't help…, terribly…

て-form + しかたない expresses a feeling one cannot control. Here 気になる 'to bother' becomes 'he couldn't stop worrying about it'.

Homoi could not stop worrying about it.

N2 far from…, rather than…

どころか denies the expected outcome and introduces the opposite. Instead of clearing, the cloudiness actually grows.

Far from clearing, the cloudiness seemed to be slowly growing larger.
